Highwayman Dante Allegro sat quietly in the car, resting, waiting for the signal pole lights to begin a slow change from ruby red to canary yellow to shamrock green. The second door of the garage opened out and served as part of a double-door entry system of security. It opened to the slithering sounds of rolling chains on greased tracks. The sliding door behind him clanged shut. Ahead he could see the asphalt apron used to direct vehicles out onto the thoroughfare. On all visible sides of the apron, ramshackle buildings remained as testimony to the power of fear. No signs of human life. No sounds of any type of life, just a blanket of silence that seemed to envelop the once bustling city of Cape Town, South Africa.
