Automobiles and Highwaymen are inseperable in Rare Species. America has a passionate love affair with automobiles (and most things driven on highways) since Henry Ford started the mass production of vehicles for everyday use. The Highwaymen are a continuation of that heritage that often binds drivers to vehicles, a feeling of becoming someone and maybe something else in the process of rolling at high speeds across all manner of roads while facing any number of unforeseen eventualities.
I chose the 1948 Tucker Tornado for many reasons as the principal vehicle for Book 1. That design, in my opinion, was light years ahead of the auto industry. The Tornado reeked of class, of function and purpose and a jump in your face run to mama for cover attitude in its lines, its shoulders, and above all else - its character. Besides, have you ever heard of a classic car that could be converted into a rolling war machine with the addition of a gun turret?
Book 2 of the Tilted Earth series introduces several new vehicles (and lots of drivers). After all, we can't let Shiva and the Twins have all the fun, eh? Do you have a vehicle that holds a place near and dear in your heart? If so, I would love to hear about it. Equallyimportant, any chance we could upgrade it for use by the Highwaymen?
